Twitter Down

On Tuesday 25th August 2009 at 20:28 GMT (21:28 BST in the UK), Twitter suffered a “service interruption”. While this really wasn’t a problem for me (I’m not addicted you know – I can stop at any time!), it reminded me of the following cartoon that was featured in an article on ReadWriteWeb.

Twitter – Let’s Not Get Too Excited

There’s a lot of hype around suggesting that Twitter is the new king of social networks. These graphical representations by mkandlez knock such claims on the head.

Since my first tweet in November 2008, I’m now in regular contact with some of the leading figures in the British and international education IT community. I doubt I would have such a useful and productive network without Twitter.

While I personally don’t “do” Facebook, my better half (she really is!) uses it as her primary tool for keeping family and friends up-to-date. Due to their very nature, Facebook-like sites will always be the favourite, at least until social network aggregation/consolidation sites like Silentale come of age.

Thank you to Swissmiss for originally sharing the top image. Please click here to read a related article by Frederic Lardinois entitled Why Do You Tweet?.

Explaining Twitter

Thanks go out to Made by Many and BBH Labs for creating and to Steve Clayton for sharing.

Finally, please remember that it really doesn’t matter if people stop following you. It’s not about the numbers!

Forget the Fail Whale!

Forget the Fail Whale!

Forget the Fail Whale and welcome the Fail Bird!

Sorry, you probably won’t understand this unless you use Twitter.

Thanks to Twitter Tips for the, er, tip.

Back in an Hour

I always use bit.ly to shorten my URLs for Twitter, mainly because of the real-time statistics it provides. It also tells me where the short URL has been recycled in another person’s tweet.

Like all on-line utilities, there are times when maintenance is required. One gets used to these services being always available, so it’s natural (even though they’re free) to feel slightly aggrieved when sites go down. It’s hard to be angry, however, when presented with a message like the one below!

Naace Strategic Conference 2009

I attended my first Naace Strategic Conference on Tuesday in Blackpool. Unfortunately, I could only attend the first day but I enjoyed the event nevertheless.

It was great to finally meet Tony Sheppard (who, as always, furnished me with some good advice) and I’m sure that I spotted a few other Twitter followers in the crowd; I just wish I’d had more time to say hello.

I sat next to Dan Buckley, Research and Development Director for Cambridge Education, during the keynote sessions. Thank you Dan for the engaging conversation and for providing an insight into how things should be done.

I thought the live Twitter stream was a great idea that seemed to work really well.

Please find below a Flickr stream of some of the photographs I took on day 1.
