SIMS Annual Conference - Phil Neal (SIMS Managing Director) - The SIMS Report

This year’s SIMS Annual Conference was held at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham University on the 22-24 June 2009. Over 330 delegates attended representing 115 local authorities. The focus of the conference was the 21st Century Local Authority, following on from last year’s 21st Century School theme.

SIMS Annual Conference 2009 - Panel Session - Setting the Challenge for LAs

In a departure from previous years, the conference was hosted by professional journalist and presenter Nadine Dereza. During platform sessions, delegates were able to text their questions to Nadine who would then relay them to the platform speakers at the end of their presentations.

A number of platform session video recordings have been made available – please click here for more details.

As well as the main keynotes, delegates had a number of electives to choose from. I was lucky enough to squeeze into a packed session run by Dave Cattlin, Information Systems Manager at Rochdale local authority and Chair of the SIMS Northern User Group. Dave explained how he and his support team rolled out a SIMS assessment tracking system to Rochdale schools and how this has benefited teaching and learning in the area.

I was interviewed as I arrived at the conference and was asked what I was looking forward to most. My answer was along the lines of “learning how I can help my schools get more out of their SIMS investment”. While this was true, it was only achieved with the help of the other attendees. It was great to catch up again with colleagues from other local authorities and partner companies (good to see you presenting at the conference again Ray!).

You’d be hard pushed to find a more dedicated, professional, friendly and forward thinking group of people at any other event. Despite suffering budget cuts, salary reductions and numerous reorganisations, the delegates who attended the SIMS Annual Conference continue to work hard to improve the opportunities for children through the effective use of management information systems in schools.

Using Pupil Data in a Primary School

Teachers’ TV published a video back in January ’09 showing how SIMS Assessment is being used as effective tool for improvement across the school.

Teachers' TV - SIMS Assessment

The synopsis begins as follows:

“Park Lane Primary School, Peterborough, demonstrates the importance of collecting, recording and analysing pupil data to monitor pupils’ progress more closely.”

SIMS Development on Twitter

Alex Cutler, Director of Schools Development at Capita Children’s Services, has taken to posting SIMS development news live on Twitter.

SIMS and Microsoft SQL Server 2008

Microsoft SQL Server 2008Capita announced at the last LA Software Update Seminar that they are considering using the Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Engine to power SIMS reports in the next decade. As a result, SIMS may well be migrated to MS SQL Server 2008 in spring 2010.

The first reports to use the new engine will replace those currently found in Nova-T4, followed by FMS and then the rest of SIMS.

Consultation will begin in March 2009 and I’ll be keen to get as much input from Bolton schools as possible.

The reason Capita are not considering the reporting engine in SQL 2005 (the version currently used by SIMS) is that it isn’t fully functional in the Express (free) version used by most non-secondary schools. Changing the reporting engine without a move to SQL 2008 would result in those schools losing the ability to create custom reports.

The move to SQL 2008 in early 2010 will have licensing implications for those on the full version of SQL Server 2005. My colleague made enquires with our licence re-seller regarding purchasing SQL Server 2008 licences now and downgrading. The response was as follows:

“Customers will have full downgrade rights as long as licences are purchased via Select.  Box products do not have downgrade rights.”

So, if you are about to make the move to full SQL Server 2005, buy 2008 licences with downgrade rights to future proof your investment. For those already on the full version with 2005 licences, please consider budgeting for SQL Server 2008 licences in the next fiscal year.

Becta: Data Handling Security Guidance for Schools

Data Security

I originally posted this on the Bolton Schools ICT Unit Blog back in September 2008 but, following my meeting yesterday, I thought I’d re-publish it here.

Becta updated their Information Security Advice page for schools last year and provided a more detailed document (Keeping Data Safe, Secure and Legal) which expands upon previous advice.

This document brings into a school context the key messages from the relatively recent Cabinet Office review entitled Data Handling Procedures in Government, the final report of which was published on 25th June 2008.

The Becta document is essential reading for any member of staff who has responsibility for handling and securing data, especially Network Managers, MIS Managers, ICT Coordinators and Head Teachers.

Microsoft UK have passed comment on the Becta document on their Schools Blog – click here for further details.

Becta also published four additional guides to accompany their Keeping Data Safe, Secure and Legal document.

Click on the links above to access the documents as PDFs or visit Becta’s Information Security Advice page for other formats.

Ray Fleming, UK Education Industry Manager for Microsoft, has posted a related article on his blog which is worth checking out – click here for details. Ray has also produced a visual representation of what the current understanding is with regard to Information Security: Click here to see more.

Becta have launched a community area for schools to discuss data handling, which can be accessed by clicking here.

6th Form + SIMS = Save Time (on Census Day)
SIMS Academic Management

SIMS Academic Management

If your school has a 6th form (or post-16 learners) and uses Capita SIMS as its management information system, you should read on.

My colleague, Neil Gregory, has posted an article on the Bolton Schools’ ICT Unit Blog referring to a PowerPoint slide show that Capita have produced.

Neil says “The slide show explains how 6th form schools can use Academic Management to create accurate course Planned End Dates, saving time come census day”.

BETT 2009

I visited BETT for first time this year and, despite advance warnings from colleagues, underestimated the sheer size of the event.

I would’ve loved to have sat down and listened to some of the presentations by Microsoft, SIMS etc. but I just didn’t have the time. I spent the entire morning in Olympia 2, a whole floor of which seemed to be hired out by RM! With half the afternoon spent in pre-booked seminars, I found myself running around trying to get to see all the stands on my hit-list!

Please don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the event and took a lot of information back to Bolton with me. My only regret is that I didn’t get the opportunity to talk more to colleagues on the NAACE stand, from EduGeek or people I associate with via Twitter.

If I’m lucky enough to attend next year, I’ll try and travel back on Saturday so I get an extra day. This will also allow me to get involved with the 2010 version of TeachMeet09Bett which, even though I’m not a teacher, sounded inspiratonal.

A special thank you goes to colleagues on the SIMS stand who interrupted their busy event schedule to speak with me. This reinforces my view that the interests of schools are best served by maintaining positive professional relationships with strategic partners.
