Coldplay – Life In Technicolor ii (HD)

This latest Coldplay video made me smile. Show it to your children, they’ll love it!

Presented in HD (720p high definition), made possible by the YouTube HD Code Hack courtesy of My Digital Life.

If no video is displayed, it’s probably because YouTube is blocked by your establishment’s web filtering policy. Sorry!

Tech Forum – February 2009

My colleagues and I are hosting a schools’ technical forum this afternoon at 15:00. I put together a Wordle image of the agenda items which clearly shows the topic of the moment.

Non-UK visitors may wish to see what BSF (Building Schools for the Future) is all about by clicking here.

Secondary/high school technical staff have a vested interest; they may well find, as part of the BSF process, that their employment contracts are transferred from the school/local government to a private sector managed service provider.

A fascinating tale of an American who moved to North Korea.

SIMS and Microsoft SQL Server 2008

Microsoft SQL Server 2008Capita announced at the last LA Software Update Seminar that they are considering using the Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Engine to power SIMS reports in the next decade. As a result, SIMS may well be migrated to MS SQL Server 2008 in spring 2010.

The first reports to use the new engine will replace those currently found in Nova-T4, followed by FMS and then the rest of SIMS.

Consultation will begin in March 2009 and I’ll be keen to get as much input from Bolton schools as possible.

The reason Capita are not considering the reporting engine in SQL 2005 (the version currently used by SIMS) is that it isn’t fully functional in the Express (free) version used by most non-secondary schools. Changing the reporting engine without a move to SQL 2008 would result in those schools losing the ability to create custom reports.

The move to SQL 2008 in early 2010 will have licensing implications for those on the full version of SQL Server 2005. My colleague made enquires with our licence re-seller regarding purchasing SQL Server 2008 licences now and downgrading. The response was as follows:

“Customers will have full downgrade rights as long as licences are purchased via Select.  Box products do not have downgrade rights.”

So, if you are about to make the move to full SQL Server 2005, buy 2008 licences with downgrade rights to future proof your investment. For those already on the full version with 2005 licences, please consider budgeting for SQL Server 2008 licences in the next fiscal year.

Detailed Data Security Guidance Delayed

data_securityFurther to my previous post on Data Handling Security, Ray Fleming (UK Education Industry Manager, Microsoft) has posted on his blog information pertaining to an additional, detailed guidance document from Becta.

Ray reports that the document, which contains specific information on MIS data items and levels of security, was originally due for publication in December 2008. It has been announced on the Becta Collaboration site that the additional guidance will now be out at the end of March 2009.

I want to thank Ray for keeping track of this subject and continuing to report back via his blog, which can be reached by clicking here.

Passion is a Fantastic, Transferable Skill…

microsoftbizcard219border-550

Dan Woodman, the Microsoft employee who famously had a tattoo of the company’s unofficial Blue Monster logo, has been laid off as part of the 1400 redundancies announced in January 2009.

The Blue Monster was created by cartoonist and professional blogger Hugh MacLeod.

In July 2008, Dan posted about his love for Microsoft on his blog with an article entitled I LOVE this company. In his final article (It is with Great Sadness…), Dan says the following:

“Working at Microsoft has been the greatest experience of my life and I have no desire to forget about it.  And even if I don’t get back into Microsoft right away (which is, by the way, my plan!), then I have a reminder that even outside of Microsoft, I need to do my best to change the world every single day.”

Dan has since started a new blog – From the Desk(top) of Dan Woodman – which will be well worth subscribing to.

I love the comment by Paul Murphy under Dan’s first post:

“Passion is a fantastic transferable skill. Look forward to seeing what you’ll get into next. All the best.”

Good luck Dan. The world needs more people like you.
